In 2015, OpenAI was a much different "company" than it is today.
In fact, it started as a non-profit artificial intelligence research company with the goal "to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return."
Elon Musk (and others) committed $1 billion to help make this a reality.
Must was originally set to personally commit $100 million before stepping down in 2018. Since then, he has been increasingly vocal about slowing down the work on these AI systems.
Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI transitioned to a for-profit company in 2020. This is likely the OpenAI that you're most aware of… thanks ChatGPT!
This irked Elon.
Today, the advancements and growth of OpenAI are unheard of. Just two months after launch they became the fastest growing consumer app in history as they surpassed 100 million monthly active users.
Maybe Elon has a point…
