Google was officially launched in 1998 by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
"The name, Google, is a play on "googol," a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. It is rumored that this reflects the founders' mission to organize the infinite amount of information on the internet."
One year after launching Gmail and going public, Google was determined to make sure 2005 was noteworthy as well.
In 2005, they would release Google Maps (note: turn-by-turn GPS would not be available until 2009).
They would also release Google Video… roughly around the same time that the first YouTube video was uploaded. We all know how this battle ended. If you can't beat 'em… buy 'em.
Other significant launched would be Google Earth, mobile web search and Google Analytics.
And just in case you forgot just how fun the web was in 2005… Google also had an online store where you could buy things like sweatpants and infant hats.
