MySpace (2005)
You remember MySpace... the undisputed most popular social network in 2005.
Originally founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson (you remember Tom!) to dethrone Friendster, the social network quickly rose in popularity — and valuation.
It was acquired in 2005 by Robert Murdoch's News Corporation for $580 million.
Just a year later, in 2006, MySpace would actually surpass Google as the most visited website in the United States.
With seemingly everything going for the social network, it would have been hard to predict its demise.
By 2008, Facebook had overtaken them and never looked back.
And the rest... is history.
In 2011 MySpace was sold for $35 million — quite the fall from its peak valuation of $12 billion.
